ADHD



Description:

·         A chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.
·         Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood.
·         ADHD has three subtypes:
  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive
  • Predominantly inattentive
  • Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive


Indicators:

  • Focused on "Me"
    • Child does not recognize other people and their needs and desires. Can cause many interruptions and may have trouble waiting their turn.
  • Difficult of keeping emotions
    • May have outbursts of anger or temper tantrums.
  • Fidgety
    • Can't sit still and want to get up and move around.
  • Unfinished Tasks
    • Show interest in many things but may not finish till the end.
  • Paying attention
    • Child may have problems with focusing.
  • Difficulty of following instructions
    • Children with ADHD are capable of learning they just may make careless mistakes.
  • Day Dreamer
    • Some children may be loud but others can be quiet, stare into space and just ignore what is going on around them.

Accommodations/Modifications

  • Provide encouragement and reassure the student
  • Encourage social interaction with peers
  • Divide complex task into smaller tasks
  • Recognize and praise good behavior
  • Keep instructions brief and clear
  • Give the student opportunities to display leadership in class 
  • Talk with the parents to find what interest the child has to help them become engaged 
  • Eliminate distractions
    • Seat student away from doors and windows
